Membership Information

Please note that we prefer on-line payments by credit card through our secure website.   For all credit cards transactions after March 1, 2010 that are not processed through the online membership account, an administration fee will apply.

Membership in the CSS/SCS:

Membership is now for two calendar years (January to December). The current membership term is from January 2011-December 2012.

The Canadian Sleep Society / Société Canadienne du Sommeil (CSS/SCS) is a professional association of clinicians, scientists and technologists formed in June 1986 at a meeting of Canadian sleep researchers, called by Dr. Roger Broughton. The Society established the following objectives:

  • The advancement of education in the area of sleep research.
  • To help consolidate and advance sleep research carried on in Canada.
  • To promote and support the growth and quality of sleep disorders studies.
  • To increase the profile and support for sleep research in Canada.
  • To increase public awareness of the importance of sleep research and to Canadas contribution to this area.

The CSS/SCS was incorporated on April 20, 1989 and also registered as a charity under the income Tax Act on February 1, 1990.

Membership is open to those individuals who support and believe in the objectives of the CSS/SCS. There are four categories of membership in the CSS/SCS:

  1. Basic Sciences (PhD, MSc, MA)
  2. Psychologist
  3. Technologist
  4. Nursing
  5. Other Allied Health Profession
  6. Physician
  7. Dentist (includes $100/yr compulsory fee for the dental fund)
  8. Student / Resident / Fellow
  9. Organization / Corporate

Membership Dues:

Membership is now for two years (January 2011 to December 2012).
  • Basic Sciences (PhD, MSc, MA) $130.00
  • Psychologist $130.00
  • Technologist $70.00
  • Nursing $130.00
  • Other Allied Health Profession $130.00
  • Physician $150.00
  • Dentist (includes $100/yr compulsory fee for the dental fund) $250.00
  • Student / Resident / Fellow $40.00
  • Organization / Corporate $1,000.00

Your society dues contribute greatly to the goals of the Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) / Société Canadienne du Sommeil (SCS) which are embodied in our mission statement.

Benefits of Membership:

  • Free on-line subscription to the Journal of Sleep Research. For more information visit: Journal of Sleep Reserach info page
  • Reduced registration fees and subsidized events at CSS/SCS scientific meetings. To date, these conferences have been held in Ottawa in 2001, Quebec City in 2004, Montreal in 2007, Toronto in 2009 and Quebec City in 2011. Our next conference will be in Halifax, Nova Scotia October 4-7, 2013. CLICK HERE for more information.
  • Invitation to the Annual General Meeting and reception held at the CSS/SCS conference, or at the APSS meeting in the U.S.A. for years when the CSS/SCS does not hold a separate meeting.
  • List your Sleep Clinic or Research Center on our website at:
    Sleep Centres Google-encanced Site. Listing privileges are restricted to clinics whose Director is a CSS/SCS member. Members of the public and health care professionals have free access to this list to help locate sleep specialists across Canada.
  • Regular newsletter. The CSS/SCS produces Vigilance, a newsletter designed to keep the membership up to date with happenings of the Society and within the field of sleep in general. Vigilance also provides a forum for discussion of controversies in the field of sleep and sleep disorders medicine. It is published on the website in the: Vigilance section.
  • Membership on the CSS/SCS e-mail list. This electronic list is used for the CSS/SCS Executive to communicate with members. Members may also use it as a forum for discussion of controversies in the field of sleep and sleep disorders medicine.
  • Access to SLEEP-L (requires an e-mail address). SLEEP-L is a list server based on a mainframe computer at Queens University dedicated to consultation and general communication among members of the international community of clinicians and researchers in the field of sleep. A subscription of SLEEP_L is not open to the general public, but it has been made available to all new members of the CSS/SCS. To join this list, CLICK HERE.
  • Option to have yourself identified on the CSS/SCS website as a Sleep Specialist to be contacted by media and members of the public: Sleep Specialists List
  • Access to the CSS/SCS membership list. This list allows you to contact your colleagues in various areas of the country, and to develop a network of expertise for clinical and/or research endeavours. This list is not published on the website, nor distributed to individuals, companies or organizations.
  • Employment opportunities online resume and case studies are posted by members. May be posted on the website for not-for-profit organizations, members, and corporate members.
  • Roger Broughton Young Investigator Award, awarded every two years to a young scientist for important early career research contributions.
  • Student and technologist prizes for research are awarded each year for the best abstract at the scientific meeting (either CSS/SCS or APSS).
    Please note: any donation you make to the Student Fund goes towards educational and social events for students as determined by the two student representatives elected to the CSS/SCS Executive. These donations are not used for the student research award as described above.

Benefits for Corporate Membership:

  • Corporate members receive acknowledgement of their support on the CSS/SCS website.
  • Corporate members receive free advertising in CSS/SCS publications (e.g., Vigilance, the official newsletter of the CSS /SCS).
  • Corporate members receive free advertising for job positions on our website. All other for-profit organizations are not permitted to advertise on the website.
  • Corporate members have access to the general membership list of CSS/SCS. This list is not published on the website, nor distributed to individuals, companies or organizations.
